History of Street Dancing

Street dance is a vernacular dance. This means that it developed naturally as a part of the culture of the time. It started in the streets of America in the 1970s. Slowly, more and more people started feeling the beats in ‘em & wanted to explore this side of the world. Street dance is just an umbrella term which encompasses a range of dance styles characterized by descriptions such as hip hop, funk and breakdancing. Because of its varied character, it has developed a whole new street dance genre which includes phrases like popping, locking, waving, and krumping. 

Street dance was & still is used as an expression of resistance and cultural identity outside the mainstream.

Being interpretive and social by nature, this energetic form of dance became a way of rising against societal norms. It came as a revolution & is serving its purpose till date.

Street Dance in India – What’s The Scene Like?

In India, Street Dance became a way of expression. People thrived as communities while they jammed on the fast beats together. The street dance fever here took over gradually but it was here to stay. Street Dancing became so famous in the country that a reality show was dedicated to it. The show went from road to road, to every nook and corner to find the best street dancers of India who leave everyone agape with their moves.

Results? A revolution in Indian dance history & television. 

Whether it was hip-hop, locking, or popping, the Indian dancers nailed every inch of it. 

Not just individuals, various dance crews in India have emerged that only focus on street dance.

On one hand, Anasua Chowdhury mastered the perfect blend of Waacking & Kathak, whereas, on the other hand, Freak N Stylz, the most famous B-boying crew from Mumbai have made their name. They are responsible for stepping up the professionalism in the scene. 

Nimble Funk won hearts with his popping & locking. He was inspired by watching Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” video as a child.

These are just a few of the thousand other street dancers in India.

They stood up and made their own identity without caring about what the world thinks. Doing something completely different from the Indian classical dances, these artists had a lot at stake. But they not only faced it, but also ruled it like a boss.

Going after what they truly wanted to do, they brought about a revolution in the art of dancing.

Today’s musings take us to a place 15 minutes away by car from our HQ in Delhi. Yo, it is time to hit Lodhi Street. But we are not here to talk about the place’s history. It is what is on the walls that we can’t stop thinking about. 

Graffiti. 

You must have seen it (and admired it) with your own eyes, too – not just in here but across swathes of urban India. Pondicherry, Panjim, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata...it is hard to separate the magnificent murals, paintings and art (or anti-art, as many label it) in a zillion colours from similarly evocative communities splashed across the country. 

But it is not just art. Graffiti is a message that channels the voice of the voiceless, the hustle of the restless, and the spirit of those who believe in #DoWhatFloatsYourboAt. And by perpetuating such messages artistically, graffiti contributes to the community in more ways than we can imagine.

Graffiti is the act of breaking down walls by painting them.  

One need only Google pictures of the demolished Berlin Wall – once upon a time touted to be the largest canvasses in the world. Filled with scribblings and paintings of global artists under anonymity, the Wall carried messages of hope, sorrow, misery, faith, satire, love and more – all spray painted into existence. Above all, the Wall’s graffiti became a message board for all things political and social – echoing what the community felt and wanted. 

Then, the Berlin Wall came down in 1990, and all the expressions of everyone who etched its surface found liberation. Such is the power of graffiti as an art form that brings to surface the hidden desires of the public, giving it a platform to advertise, spread awareness and inspire action. 

Just like the rest of the world, in India, it is not uncommon to see wall art on issues like poverty, hunger, women empowerment, abuse, environment, etc. And when you ponder at the message behind the graffiti, you know a fire has been stoked in your heart. Praise be to the artists with a cause!

Graffiti is a force for transformation for communities. 

Beyond the social and political commentary through which graffiti has become a modern-day weapon for truth, it is also a tool to spark back life into communities. 

With a stroke of genius, artists transform dilapidated houses, shanty streets and obscure urban corners into happening spots. All it takes is imagination, talent and the will to mark public walls with expressions of self, of the society, of culture and of local identity. And lo and behold we have a landmark that infuses new life into a community and brings them a lot of opportunities and limelight to earn a better livelihood. 

Know that urge to take a selfie or drop an Instagram story while posing beside graffiti art? That is what we are talking about. That is what you love and the community that you are promoting loves. 

Graffiti inspires revolutionaries.

In the words of Tyler, “Graffiti is often looked upon as vandalism, but I don’t destroy. I create. Good things happen when people come together for a cause. And it becomes all the more awe inspiring when it is pulled-off against great odds. Be it change of the landscape of Alwar from complete barrenness to a plush green area, purely on the efforts of the local communities; or the creation of a safe place like Skateistan for children in a war torn Afghanistan.

Places like Skateistan where people from different communities come together and express themselves became a place for the kids to be free, and to momentarily forget all conflicts around them. What happened in Afghanistan was inspiring to Ulrike Reinhard and gave way to the idea of a Skate park in a small village in the heart of India.

Located in Madhya Pradesh, Janwar is like any other small village in India and has its own social evils. It was a place where educating  girls was not deemed important, the unsaid rules of the caste system still affected people’s actions. To disrupt this set-up with the construction of a skating park was a game changer, where children from all communities would play. While the initial intentions of Reinhard was to set-up schools, the idea transformed into the setting up of something off-beat.  

Metaphorically,  the skating park and its vibe was a counter culture to the status quo. A place where kids from different communities could come together. The girls in Janwar seized this opportunity to step out. Now they had a common place where they could be free, feel the wind brushing their cheeks, experience true freedom during the moments spent on the board. They were not bound by the boundaries of their house, instead they had a place where they could move around freely without any hindrance. Skating in the rink was liberating for them. Soon enough, skateboarding was the best thing that happened in their life. So, from being a mere escape route, skateboarding became a passion for them. It gave them a chance to come out of the boundaries of their house. Where in a normal scenario they would have been married by the time they hit their 20s, handling their family. In doing what was making them feel happy, they broke those shackles of the society. In following what they like, they started to do what floats their boAt. 

And so it happened. With the girls coming out, the skating rink in Janwar, the Janwar Castle, became a place where the lines of differences blurred. Kids irrespective of their caste or gender were playing in the same rink. Still for them to take on skateboarding was taking on a “boys sport”. The rink was still dominated by the boys. The few girls present there were looked down on and were welcomed with nasty comments. So the “girls first” rule was introduced to challenge the otherwise “boys first” culture prevalent in the village. All this happened because a few girls dared to step out of the “domestic”. This stepping out in itself was a rebellion to the norms of the place and now they were zooming past on skateboards. Changes like this are bound to get some resistance. But the girls still persisted to do what floats their boAt.

With the girls moving out and doing what they liked, they also opened  a plethora of opportunities themselves. They got a chance at education. They got to pursue skateboarding as a full-time  career. Asha Gond with Reinhard’s help got a chance to study abroad. She and a few other kids from the village represented India at the World Championship of skateboarding, and won accolades at multiple championships.  Things were improving for them with all of it riding on their grit to achieve something.

These achievements on the surface also got them something better. The environment around them was changing. More importantly, they had brought about this change. They did for themselves what history could never do for them. They broke gender and caste barriers and brought communities together. The rule of “no skating, no school” coupled with “girls first” attitude in the rink improved the attendance in schools, especially for girls.

All this on the efforts of Gen-Z in the village. 

These efforts are not in isolation. They have a domino effect. After Janwar Castle being the first skating park in rural India, you also see a similar thing happening in Khempur, Rajasthan. During the making of Skater Girl, Khempur got its own Desert Dolphin Skatepark. Which will eventually open doors for the kids there like it did for the kids in Janwar. As they strive to do what floats their boAt, they will also get a chance to turn the tables for a brighter future.

I guess we’re back, baby! 

And I like that.

So, who’s up for a cool story?

Once upon a time, in the land of Audiophilia, there used to be a school of warriors. There, students were trained in defeating a great enemy called Noise…and its many agents who went by the name Decibels.

As you can imagine, these Decibels were menacing. They would attack the Audiophilia citizens everywhere – on the journey back home, at work meetings, or when they would be preparing for some exam or festival. Sometimes, these Decibels would even attack them on Sundays when people would be meditating or simply trying to rest and relax! After all, Noise and its Decibels would never rest!

Fed up, the citizens of Audiophilia started training warriors to keep Noise and Decibels at bay. While the warriors were good, they could never be done with the Decibels for good. Why? Because they were trained only to defend in the event of a Decibel attack. But then, a new warrior was born to break this cycle…

His name was Anc and he had a very astonishing power: he could create agents of his own called Reverse Decibels!Which meant that whenever a Decibel and a Reverse Decibel would collide, they would both be instantly destroyed! This allowed him to actively go on the hunt for Decibels and slay them instead of just reacting to an attack on his land. That’s what superheroes do, right?

And, thus, was born the legend of Anc…the conqueror of Noise!

Active Noise Cancellation – What’s the Hype All About?

We’ll admit it…Active Noise Cancellation is a pretty big deal in the world of audio. Which is why we can’t stop raving about it at boAt.

There was a time when only the most expensive headphones and audio monitors had this technology. But we said ‘Nah! True boAtheads and audiophiles deserve it’, and here we are. However, it’s easy to confuse ANC with Passive Noise Cancellation which is simply shutting out ambient noise by forming a tighter seal over your earcup or using extra padding. Well, just like the superhero of Audiophilia, ANC is different…and much, much better!

What ANC does is it uses microphones to actively listen for any ambient noise signal. Hear, hear!

Then, after capturing that signal, it reverses it to form an anti-noise signal. Next, this anti-noise signal is then fed into the ear over the captured noise signal and the audio being played on the earphones. As you can imagine, both neutralise each other…leaving you enjoying the company of only the #SoundThatMatters. This is what we call ‘Active Noise Cancellation’.

Now that you know the different between Passive and Active Noise Cancellation, you would probably appreciate the boAtAirdopes 601 ANC even better.

But hang on…we’re not done yet…because the 601 ANC takes it one step further!

Active Noise Cancellation – Different Types, Different Results

Yes, even ANC comes in different types.

Simply put, in this type of Active Noise Cancellation, the mic sits outside the audio device and maps the noise signal that the user will hear, thereby neutralising it. Although it has great noise sensitivity, it is mostly good only for mid-frequency sounds like traffic or speech. However, low-frequency sounds can bleed in, especially if the fit is inadequate. In fact, a feedforward ANC can even amplify certain kinds of ambient noise like the howling of the wind!

The second kind of Active Noise Cancellation involves placing the mic inside the audio device and closer to the ear. This is more accurate than Feedforward ANC since it captures and cancels the true noise that a user hears. However, it is susceptible to diminish the quality of your music or microphone audio since these sounds are clubbed together with the noise that the interior mic filters!

So, you must be thinking why not combine both feedforward and feedback? Bingo! This is where boAt’s technology in the 601 ANC comes into play. While Hybrid ANC requires more power, it is highly adaptable and suppresses a large frequency range of noise – both ambient and internal – to provide you with the rush of true audiophilia!

A rider sees a motorcycle and can imagine all the adventure that comes with it. Bike rides have always been associated with a sense of adventure. A lot of this thrill comes from the level of risk involved on a two-wheeler. This risk and thrill adds a sense of adventure even to the otherwise mundane daily commute.  

Bikes are not just a means to travel, it is the extension of the rider’s personality. The way one likes to keep their bike tells us about the person. Some like it to the book, a factory fitted bike; some prefer to add their own ring to it with modifications. Some like to get it fixed, others prefer to work on their own bikes. Pretty much like having a tattoo as an extension of your being. And when it comes to expressing yourself honestly, no one does it better than the Gen-Z. 

What the US War Veterans did in the 1940s by forming biker groups and modifying their bikes, the millenials and Gen-Z are doing now in our country. The Indian likes of Rajputana Customs have inspired other passionate bikers to put a bit of their personality on their bikes with its displays in India Bike Week and Auto Expo 2010.

India had already started to adopt bikes over scooters in the 90s. When legends like the RX100 and Splendor were new in the market, they became a much more viable option of transport over scooters with their superior fuel economy and handling. But, the Millennials and  Gen-Z were still growing up and the bikes were still far from starting a national trend of being our travel companions.

With the dawn of the 21st century, factors started aligning to be the launch pad of the motorcycle boom. In the past two decades, the highways have gotten better, channels like Youtube have empowered bikers to share their stories, GoPro, body armor and helmets are now readily available, and at the center of it all — better thumpers.

With a wide variety of bikes in the market, now it was not just a means of daily commute, it became a reflection of personality. You can have cruiser bike so you view the surroundings; a bike which is quick if thrilling speed gets your adrenaline pump through your blood; or an adventure bike if you like to get off the road; and at all points you can change it to go with your vibe, the way your passion drives you, change it to the way your boAt floats. Now commuting the highways on a two-wheeler was a lot safer. The Boomers used a two-wheeler out of economic compulsion, but the Millennials and Gen-Z chose the bike  to be their travel partners for the sheer bliss that comes with riding.

“I have no strings on me”  

While riding, you feel everything that you pass through, interacting with the environment at every moment as the engine thumps under your seat and cities get smaller. And let’s admit it, whether we hate it or like it, we cannot help turning our heads whenever a bike with any kind of substantial sound zooms past us.

But what makes the bike ride special and different? There is Highway Hypnosis, your back hurts, generally  bike crashes are way more fatal than a car crash, and a ton of other challenges that come with a long bike ride. Why does a 20-something choose to risk a highway ride on a bike? 

For one it is the sheer sense of freedom that comes with a bike. Biking is a liberating experience. While being on their machine, taming their beast as riders leave cities behind, they also forget the everyday stress of life. It does not stop at just that; it is the wind on your face, the smells of the country that enters your being as you pass through. 

The bike gives a route of expression not just through the way it looks, but also through giving an option of adopting a style of travel. Rather by making biking your lifestyle. The bike is not limited to the schedule of the bus, train or plane that one books. Riders can follow their own schedule, move at their own pace, stop where they wish to stop, and choose to enter the landscape which would otherwise be admired from afar. This style of travel offers the liberty to detour as one wishes.

This experience is not limited to oneself. There is a whole subculture of bikers who capture their journey and share it. With the boom of the internet, Youtube and GoPro, some Millennials and Gen-Z have made vlogging a bike ride as a means of their bread and butter. Starting with juggling a day job and editing vlogs on the weekends, using expensive equipment,  motovlogging is an expensive hobby. But, the rewards are not just monitory, the motovloggers make their viewers their pillion, getting them a first person account of their thrilling journey. It gets them a bumpy road to online fame, they help people select bikes based on their reviews, some do it for a cause, and at last they get some kind of a monetary benefit out of it. 

Not being part of the herd, lets one make their own story. It lets you interact with the communities you visit. You can explore spots which a planned tour will not allow you to explore.    

Riding gives you the feeling of having control. The only thing controlling you are the speed limits and stop signs. You have an open road ahead, and all the time to yourself. One can choose to share the journey, either in the form of a story, or with a travel companion. What food to eat, packing it from the base camp, choosing a touristy restaurant, or stopping at a place where the locals eat - you get to choose what happens throughout. At any point it gives you all the choices and that makes the journey more rewarding than the destination.

As far as rites of passages go, earning the driving license after turning 18 continues to hold a special meaning for young millennials…and, presently, the Gen Z in India.

It has never been just about learning a fundamental life skill. Rather, we continue to exalt the moment as one of pride, where you finally tame a rumbling, precision-engineered beast, signalling a gear shift to adulthood. Or you find the keys to thrill and freedom. But either way, this love affair with driving in the country often ends there (or extends till we have had our share of road trips and off-roading). Or does it? Because deep into the defiant, trendsetting hearts of India’s young millennials and Gen Z, there’s a growing fire…one that desires nothing more than to burn some rubber on the asphalt. Cue: motorsport, especially F4 racing.

Wheels of Passion

What you saw just the other week as Max Verstappen won his first world championship was another electrifying glimpse into the top tier of racing: F1. In that regard, F4 might sound tame. But ask youngsters like Mira Erda and Sneha Sharma in India who have challenged more than just odds to make it, and they’ll swear by F4’s untapped potential in turning the ‘racing as a career’ narrative in India upside down.

Launched in 2014, FIA Formula 4 represents a fantastic opportunity for the budding, young race car drivers of the world to level up from go-karting to serious open-wheel racing. Just last year, F4 arrived in India as FIA sanctioned Regional F3 and F4 championships to be organised in the country in 2022. What young drivers in India are staring at now is a golden ticket to rack up 40 official points over 3 years and become eligible for the FIA superlicense to race in F1!

But there’s more to F4 than what meets the eye. It is a more affordable and accessible platform where the young driving enthusiasts in India can unleash and master their inner Schumacher – and drive a culture of changing attitudes towards the sport.

Millennials & Gen Z: Steering Clear of the Norm

If you haven’t been noticing, young Indian generations with a keen interest in the unconventional are done with their foot off the gas. Growing up as the Internet generation, they have had a steady supply of the grand prix era throughout their budding years. Far be it from them to look at Karthikeyan or Chandok with the question, ‘What might have been?’. Rather, they look up to them with inspiration and ambition: “If they can, I can!” 

Like other hustlers of their generation, the protagonists of India’s thriving racing subculture have had to battle more off the track than on it. The pressure of academics and falling in line with typical jobs is a given. ‘Speed thrills but kills’ has been another cultural truism that has been a detriment tO the Indian perspective on motorsport. A dangerous hobby. A huge professional risk. Hooliganism. Or simply far too expensive a passion to pursue.

But Gen Z remains unwavering in its conviction. Forget dotting the Is or crossing the Ts in client mails every morning. They would rather be crossing the chequered flag. Some began dabbling in it after starting off as ardent automobile and racing bloggers. Today, they’re doing their talking both on virtual platforms like Instagram and YouTube as well as spending weekends at the likes of Buddh International Circuit participating in local series and racing championships. And they’re not just tuning up their driving skills but also technical skills through online and offline forums and events.

Indian and global auto manufacturers are now investing seriously in the sport as well – launching training academies and competitive programs. All because the new, young, unapologetically ambitious India dares to do what floats its boAt and make the nation give up its motorsport misgivings, once and for all.

Take pioneering F4 racer Mira Erda, for example, who spent her early years battling the noise of ‘you can’t do it’. Now, nothing else matters to her at the sight of the track – her real home for the past 12 years. In 2017, she became the first Indian woman to race in the prestigious Euro JK series. At the end of the day, Mira Erda, and the countless young guns she has inspired, epitomise what we boAtheads like to say: when you’re free to race away from the herd, you’re free to become who you’re meant to be.

Disco was losing popularity, and there is also a pretty interesting history about Steve Dahl and his anti-disco rally. The people were saturated with disco and DJ Frankie Knuckles and some of his contemporaries started to compose and synthesize music using available sounds, mixing and extending dance pieces of songs. 

Eventually it spread out from Chicago and became  a global rage. It travelled to Europe, entered international music hubs like London and Paris and with each cultural influence transformed into a sub-genre. While in India, in the 80s, Charanjit Singh Panesar started analogue synthesis using his Roland T-303 to change scales of tabla in his music, eventually giving birth to music which was similar to what was being produced in Chicago; the end result being ‘Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat’.

From the ashes of disco, a kind of music emerged which was different from the genres before it, for the first time music was being created without playing any musical instrument. With its integration with Indian culture, Electronic Dance Music in India started to (use electronic music with Indian instruments) sound mystical, with spirituality being at the center of it. 

The Gen Z Effect

Emerging from the underground clubs of Chicago or the home studio of Charanjit Singh Panesar, by virtue of its origin, House and Dance Music have been independent in nature. But where do the Millennials and Gen Z come in?

Due to its independent nature, while house and dance music struggled being part of the mainstream, the internet gave independent artists space to express themselves without the support of mainstream record labels; and music was democratized. It could survive without being part of the mainstream. 

While everybody else adopted the internet, Gen Z was born in it. It was the primary consumer which acknowledged and appreciated the independent artists, the way they were looking to be acknowledged for being different from every previous generation. The listeners of the music were looking for something unconventional, beyond the ordinary. Adopting House music and EDM was just the right deal which was as flexible as them in creating different identities with every culture that it entered.

The popularity of the genre was dogged by the pooling-in of resources resulting in festivals like Sunburn. In following its passion, Gen Z created an entire culture which is part of our lives now, making House music and EDM the life of house parties and clubs. So, what indeed is the best way to set up your Aavante home theatre and soundbar? No, simply installing it underneath your TV just won’t cut it, champ. You see, we know you don’t want to be in a situation where you’re constantly turning down the volume when your Lord of the Rings cuts to an epic battle, only to then bump it up trying to make out Frodo’s whispy, frail words. If only you had one perfect setting to rule them (audio) all…

Well, it’s all about setting up your home theatre system in a way so that you achieve acoustic nirvana – wherever in the room you maybe. Everything from the size of your room and the direction of the soundbar or woofers to their placement and the empty space around them can determine how incredible your home theatre sounds. 5. Check the HDMI ARC connection and switch off TV speakers

The HDMI ARC port on your Aavante is truly a God-sent! It removes any need to attach an additional optical cable, thus enabling you to downstream audio from TV (or any source connected to it) to your home theatre! Additionally, it also transmits a higher sound quality than a regular connection. While most TVs will automatically detect it, you might have to play with your TV settings in case you suspect the HDMI ARC connection is not working properly.
