“Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist!”
What must have been going through the great Pablo Picasso’s mind when he came out with this extraordinary quote? Something utterly rad, probably. For an artist whose response to thinking out of the box was co-inventing an entirely new (and insane) art form, breaking the rules must have been second nature. He painted in the night by artificial light, by the way.
All our lives, we are taught to obey the rules. To stand in a straight line and dare not overstep. Yet, those with the quintessential creative spirit have shown, much like Picasso, that true progress is not possible until you #DoWhatFloatsYourboAt.
If you are a hustler from the global design community reading this, we’re sure that you would nod furiously in agreement with Picasso’s words.
First, you learn the rules: The tools of the trade, the thinking behind form, the application of intelligence, the principles of delivering a great user experience. Then, you break them…and you break them hard: The abstract forms, the clever design hacks, the novel application of classic principles, and so much more. And for industrial and product designers, challenging the existing rules of their ecosystem to rethink the old is their bread and butter.
Much like the other young gamechangers and influencers of our age, the industrial designers are emerging as true behemoths as challengers of the conventional. The young and the restless who are unafraid to follow the road less travelled. The budding Leonardo da Vincis who take their art and theory beyond the canvas to solve practical problems and invent entirely new solutions – all with the love language of design.
So, where does boAt come into the picture? Akin to the rappers and street artists, the hip-hoppers and skateboarders, and the sneakerheads and the speed racers, the design community thrives at the brink of disruption. Through their design, they practice what is the epitome of doing what floats their boat. To us, that sounds inspiring and perfect!
Which is why, true to our philosophy, we are beyond thrilled to fuel the industrial design movement and turn the hustle into a new age revolution.
